Italian infrastructure operator RFI has awarded a consortium of Webuild and Ghella a contract worth €1.2 billion to build the 27 km section under lot 4A of a new railway line being built between Palermo and Catania in Sicily. Lot 4A covers the section between Caltanissetta Xirbi and Nuova Enna and will run mostly underground via 20 km of tunnels. The lot also includes 4 km of elevated sections. The new line is part of the TEN-T network’s Scandinavian-Mediterranean Corridor and is designed to cut the journey time between Palermo and Catania by 60 minutes to two hours. The contract is being financed by the Recovery and Resilience Plan (PNRR). Webuild leads the consortium with a 75% stake.
