Updated railway siding charter for stronger rail freight transport presented

An alliance of 56 associations and organisations has presented the federal government with an updated siding charter containing 97 measures to strengthen rail freight transport. The initiative, led by the Association of German Transport Companies (VDV), aims to create more and more modern sidings and customer-oriented access points. The charter, which was first published in 2019 and has now been updated, contains proposals for improving rail freight transport infrastructure and increasing the share of rail freight transport in the transport mode mix to 25% by 2030. It emphasises the importance of rail connections for the economy and climate protection and proposes measures to strengthen tri- and multimodal hubs as well as transshipment terminals. The Federal Ministry for Digital and Transport Affairs (BMDV) is supporting the initiative by subsidising private investment in the construction and expansion of sidings.
