Stuttgart 21 cost predicted to rise to almost €10 billion

According to various reports, the Stuttgart 21 project will cost almost €10 billion and will not be completely finished by the end of 2025. This is reported by Der Spiegel and refers to internal documents of German state railway DB. According to these documents, the costs are now to be €9.76 billion, €614 million more than estimated in 2022. This means that the project has become four times more expensive since the first cost estimate in 1995. Completion is also not completely assured. According to the paper, there is uncertainty around the Digital Node Stuttgart (DKS), as many components will not be available until May 2024. At the end of 2025, the system would therefore not have all its functionalities. There are also delays in the conversion of the old reception building. Poor planning quality had delayed the work, but DB is now concentrating on the operational start of relevant parts of the building. Other problems include the station's power supply, for which the network configuration is currently being revised. With the additional costs, DB's provision funding is almost completely exhausted.
