Scottish government seeks zero-emission rail transport from 2035

The Scottish government has presented a policy that will eliminate emissions from rail transport by 2035. The scheme is part of a strategy to make the Scottish economy completely emission-free by 2045, which would be five years earlier than the UK’s goal. According to the Scottish Ministry of Transport, the greatest challenge in the context of zero-emission rail transport will be to implement the strategy for most railway lines that are in remote areas. The goal of zero emissions is to be realised through electrification as well as support programme for alternative fuels. Moreover, the Scottish government is committed to implementing the scheme on several rail freight transport projects.
