Saarstahl Rail develops green rails made of low-CO2 steel

Saarstahl's French subsidiary Saarstahl Rail has developed green rails made of low-CO2 steel for environmentally-conscious customers. The production of these rails is based on the circular economy model, whereby industrial scrap, in particular from the Saarstahl Rail plant and various railway networks, is recycled. In 2022, a total of 262,000 t of rails were delivered to the Hayange plant, of which 227,000 t were produced using green methods, representing a CO2 saving of 415,000 t. Saarstahl Rail has been awarded a contract for two sections of the Grand Paris Express (GPE) infrastructure project, which will connect Greater Paris to the existing metro network by 2030. So far, more than 6,000 t of rails have left the Hayange plant and a firm order for another 12,000 t has been placed.
