Reactivation of the Darßbahn railway economically advantageous

A profitability study ordered by the public transport authority for the German federal state of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania (VMV) has confirmed that the reactivation of the Darßbahn railway between Barth – Zingst – Prerow for regional passenger rail transport makes economic sense. In accordance with the report, the benefits from reduced journey times and better connections to the region exceed the costs of the reopening, which means that financial support from the federal government is possible. The planned line comprises four construction sections totalling 19.3 km, with some of the existing lines being renovated. The total cost of the construction project has been estimated at around €204 million. The federal state's share of the funding is to come from regionalisation funds, and the application is scheduled to be submitted by summer 2024. Usedomer Bäderbahn will act as the infrastructure operator.
