Quadruple-tracking of Malmö – Lund line completed

On 10th December 2023, a 12 km quadruple-track section was opened on the Malmö – Lund line in Sweden. The section is part of the southern main line and increases the capacity between Malmö and Lund from 460 to 650 trains per day. The two centre tracks will now be used by long-distance passenger rail transport, while other services will use the two outer tracks. This also enables regional transport to be improved and several stations have been upgraded accordingly. A completely new station was built in Lund. Parts of the line were built in cuttings or completely underground to reduce the impact of operational noise. Together with a double-tracking the 24 km Ängelholm – Helsingborg line, the total costs amount to around €688 million (SEK 7.8 billion). The construction work was realised by a consortium including Sweden's NCC and Spain's OHLA. Work began in 2017 and was completed in September 2023.
