Provincial governor approves upgrading of Merano – Bolzano line

Arno Kompatscher, the governor of the province of Bolzano, has been authorised by the provincial government to give his consent to the execution of construction works on the Merano – Bolzano line. This includes the construction of a new 1.2 km three-track railway tunnel under the Virgl mountain and the relocation of a branch of the Merano railway. The authorisation was given at the request of the Italian infrastructure manager RFI. In future, the extension will make it possible to reach the Bolzano railway station without crossing the Brenner line. An agreement with the operator of the A22 Brenner motorway is still required for the start of the construction work.
