The UK's Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has announced at the Conservative Party Conference in Manchester that the northern section of the HS2 high-speed rail (HSR) line will not be built. While the government will complete Phase 1 from Birmingham to Euston, Phase 2 to Manchester and Crewe will be cancelled. Sunak justified the decision by saying that the plans for HS2 were based on old assumptions. The €41.5 billion (GB£36 billion) saved will reportedly instead be spent on other transport links in the North, Midlands and across the country.
