ÖBB starts electrification of the Koralm Tunnel

Austrian state railway ÖBB has begun installing the overhead lines in the Koralm Tunnel. This is also the final construction phase of the project. Arge Rhomberg and European Trans Energy are supplying the overhead lines for the tunnel. Vorarlberg-based company Rhomberg Sersa Rail Group and the Porr Group are responsible for the logistics and large parts of the railway technology. The tracks, switches, and digital technology for switch monitoring are being supplied by Voestalpine, while Siemens Mobility is responsible for implementing the European Train Control System (ETCS). Linz-based Sprecher Automation is supplying its automation systems for the safe transmission and monitoring of the electrical and mechanical system components. The main construction work is scheduled to be completed by the end of 2024. The start of operations phase will then begin, which will involve several months of testing, measuring, practising, and training, as well as many official approvals by the end of 2025. The 33 km tunnel will go into operation at the end of 2025 and will enable train speeds of up to 250 km/h.
