Network Rail to spend €51.3 billion on network modernisation from 2024 to 2029

According to the UK Department for Transport (DfT), infrastructure manager Network Rail will spend around €51.3 billion (£44 billion) on operation, maintenance and renewal of the national railway network for the five-year period from 2024 until 2029. Of this sum, €32.1 billion will be supported by network grants provided directly by the government to Network Rail, with the remainder covered by the infrastructure operator’s own income. Ultimately, the Office of Rail and Road (ORR) will determine the final level of income required by Network Rail through its Periodic Review. Funding for network enhancements is excluded from these funds.
