MIT approves 2 HSR projects worth €4.5 billion

On 20th December 2022, the Superior Council of Public Works at the Italian Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport (MIT) approved two high-speed rail (HSR) projects in the south of the country worth a total of €4.5 billion. These concern the Salerno – Reggio Calabria and Palermo – Catania lines. For the Salerno – Reggio Calabria line, the technical-economic feasibility project of the first 33 km between Battipaglia and Romagnano worth €2.7 billion was approved, which will be financed with PNRR resources. For the Palermo – Catania line, the final project for the Tratta Fiumetorto – Lercara Diramazione section was approved, the last functional lot worth €1.8 billion. Both projects are parts of the TEN-T corridor.
