IP tenders electrification of Caldas da Rainha – Louriçal Linha do Oeste section

On 12th February 2024, Portuguese infrastructure operator IP issued a tender for the electrification and modernisation of the section between Caldas da Rainha and Louriçal on the Linha do Oeste western line. The project, which is part of the PNI2030 national investment programme, aims to improve the infrastructure of the railway line and make the railway link more efficient for the municipalities of Caldas da Rainha, Alcobaça, Nazaré, Marinha Grande, Leiria, and Pombal. The planned measures include increasing the speed to 160 km/h, the double-track expansion of certain sections to connect to the high-speed rail (HSR) line, electrification with 25 kV 50 Hz AC, the installation of modern signalling and telecommunications systems, the removal of level crossings, and the renovation of metal bridges. A base price of €7.5 million was set for the tender.
