HSR lines planned between 10 largest cities

Portugal's newly published National Railway Plan (PFN) plans to connect the country's ten largest cities with high-speed rail (HSR) lines by 2050. In addition, new HSR lines to Spain are to be opened. Work on the Évora – Elvas line is already underway. Once completed, the line will allow direct HSR connections between Lisbon and Madrid. In addition, the Porto – Lisbon HSR line and the first phase of the Porto – Vigo line are planned. The PFN also includes the Aveiro – Viseu – Guarda – Vilar Formoso line. The expansion of the network is expected to increase the market share of passenger rail transport from 4.6% to 20% and the market share of rail freight transport from 13% to 40%.
