Government resumes planning for Gothenburg – Borås line

The Swedish government has changed its position on the question of a new line from Gothenburg via Landvetter Airport to Borås. Now the transport authority Trafikverket has been ordered to resume the planning for the approx. 60 km line, which was interrupted at the end of 2022. The focus will no longer be on a pure high-speed rail (HSR) line, but more on freight and commuter services. Compared to the previous plans, the line is now to be planned more cost-efficiently and economically. For the Skåne region, the government has also decided on two new tracks between Hässleholm and Lund as well as several other capacity-increasing measures to be included in the national plan for transport infrastructure. These measures are part of the financial framework for the former Hässleholm – Lund project, which is part of the Nya Stambanan line. What concessions the government has made to the Sweden Democrats party, on whose agreement it depends, is unclear. The Sweden Democrats last publicly rejected the new construction in June 2023 and instead called for a modernisation of the Gothenburg – Borås – Kalmar line.
