Government cuts €300 million from TEN-T project

The Italian government has cancelled €300 million allocated for a key project along one of the Italian branches of the Scandinavia-Mediterranean TEN-T corridor. The project affected is the development of a rail link between the Vespucci terminal near the port of Livorno and the Vada – Pisa main line in Tuscany. Francesco Gazzetti, the regional councillor responsible for infrastructure, shared this information, and described the government's decision as an attack on Tuscany's dignity and an attempt to weaken opportunities for growth and development. The Tuscany region invested €20 million in the construction of a railway viaduct to connect the port of Livorno with the Vespucci terminal, but the state did not follow suit. The total cost of the project to improve the rail connection to the port of Livorno and the Vespucci terminal was €488 million, of which the governing coalition under Mario Draghi allocated a total of €312 million in June 2022. However, the current Ministry of Infrastructure under the leadership of Matteo Salvini decided to cut most of the funding and only provide €12 million.
