Government considers privatisation of FSI and postal service

The Italian government is considering privatising the Italian state railway FSI and the postal service Poste Italiane in order to increase state revenue. Italian prime minister Giorgia Meloni confirmed these plans at a press conference on 4th January 2024. For the postal service, this could mean a reduction in state ownership without reducing public control. In the case of FSI, there is the possibility of private individuals acquiring minority shares. According to a forecast by Italian business newspaper Il Sole 24 Ore, the state could earn between €4.7 billion and €6.1 billion by putting 49% of FSI and less than 30% of Poste Italiane on the market. However, Meloni conceded that a partial privatisation of FSI could take a long time.
