Government approves funding for urban rail projects

The Italian government has approved funding for urban rail projects in four cities. The Ministers of Infrastructure and Transport and of Economy and Finance have released the first tranche of €362 million out of a total budget of €931 million for 2023 for investments in urban public transport systems. Turin will receive €221.7 million for the extension of its Light Rail Transit (LRT) Line 12 to the Allianz Stadium and for works on the Turin – Ceres line. Genoa will receive €74.5 million for the extension of the light metro northwards to Rivarolo and the completion of the Martinez station on the eastern extension of the line. Milan will receive €65.9 million for upgrading fire-fighting equipment on the M1, M2 and M3 metro lines. In addition, the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport has selected the Italian-Spanish joint venture SSI comprising Fininc and Sacyr to finance, design and build a 10.6 km light metro extension in Catania, Sicily. The €650 million project includes the extension of the standard-gauge light metro from Misterbianco through the Ardizzone tunnel to Paternò.
