€781 million to be invested in railway infrastructure in 2023

The Portuguese government is planning to invest €781 million in the railway infrastructure in 2023 for four major projects. €324 million is planned for the international southern corridor, including the new line between Evora and the Eastern Railway. The second investment, aimed at modernising the Beira Alta line between Santa Comba Dão and Guarda, is budgeted at €261 million. For the Minho and Northern lines, investments of €133 million are foreseen for 2023. The last part of the total investment, €153 million, is for the modernisation of lines such as Sintra or Algarve. In addition to the rail infrastructure, the expansion of urban transport and the purchase of rail vehicles will also be supported. €653 million is planned for the extension of the Lisbon metro and the light rail transit (LRT) networks in Porto and Coimbra. The purchase of 139 rail vehicles for Portuguese state railway CP and the expansion of the Lisbon metro fleet by 20% will be funded with €228 million.
