EU plans stronger control of TEN-T implementation

The European Union (EU) is planning to monitor more closely the implementation of the standards of the Trans-European Transport Network (TEN-T) on the national rail networks of the member states. In future, the member states are to report annually on their progress in implementation. In addition, in the event of significant delays, the EU will be obliged to start infringement proceedings against the respective states. Significant delays are considered to be targets missed by more than two years in the installation of all technical and operational standards. However, some relief for implementation is also planned. Rail networks no longer have to be generally upgraded for the P400 profile, and conventional signalling systems may continue to be operated until 2040. Only lines on the core network have to be electrified and there will be exceptions for the 740-metre network.
