EC and Parliament reach agreement on TEN-T network

The European Parliament and the European Council (EC) have reached an agreement on TEN-T trans-European transport network regulations. This provides for the development of a sustainable and resilient TEN-T network. The agreement sets binding targets for the network, including the promotion of sustainable modes of transport and the improvement of multimodality. By 2040, passenger rail lines on the TEN-T core network and the extended core network are supposed to enable trains to travel at speeds of 160 km/h or more. The European Rail Traffic Management System (ERTMS) is to be installed across the entire TEN-T network. Certain major airports are to be connected via long-distance passenger rail transport. In addition, all 430 major cities on the TEN-T network are to develop plans for sustainable urban mobility. The agreement also provides for improved connections to neighbouring third countries by integrating Ukraine, Moldova, and the six partners in the Western Balkans into the newly established European transport corridors. Formal adoption of the political agreement is still pending.
