EBRD finances line to Montenegro

The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) has granted a loan of €98.75 million to the Albanian state railway Hekurudha Shqiptare for the modernisation and electrification of the 120 km Vora – Hani i Hotit railway line to the border with Montenegro. The modernisation of the line is part of Albania's national strategy to improve the quality and accessibility of rail transport and the expansion of the Trans-European Transport Network (TEN-T) in the region. The project, with a total value of €373 million, is also being financed by the European Investment Bank (EIB) and the European Union through the Western Balkans Investment Framework (WBIF), which is providing €128.8 million in grants and up to €12.1 million in technical assistance. The upgrade to a line speed of 120 km/h includes the renewal of twelve railway stations, the installation of a new telecommunications and signalling system as well as safety improvements.
