EBRD and EC grant €43 million to modernise Valcinet – Cainari line

On 27th June 2023, the Moldovan government, the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) and the European Commission (EC) signed a grant and credit agreement worth a total of €43 million for the modernisation of the Valcinet – Ocnita – Balti – Ungheni – Chisinau – Cainari railway corridor. According to the Moldovan Ministry of Infrastructure and Regional Development, Moldova has not invested in its railway infrastructure for the past 30 years, but with the war in Ukraine and the change in logistics chains, there is an urgent need to invest in this transport infrastructure. Measures on the 128 km line are scheduled to be completed by 2025. The loan comprises funds worth €23 million from the EBRD and €20 million from the EC. At the same time, the Moldovan government is also negotiating with the European Investment Bank (EIB) for a grant of more than €10 million and a loan of €10 million for the modernisation of the railway network.
