DfT approves a further €4.5 billion for TRU

The UK's Rail Minister Huw Merriman announced on 4th December 2023 that the Transpennine Route Upgrade (TRU) rail project, which aims to modernise the Manchester – Huddersfield – Leeds – York line in northern England, will receive a further €4.5 million (GB£3.9 billion). The additional funds are to be invested in the four-track expansion of the Huddersfield – Ravensthorpe section and its new signalling system. Once the entire TRU project has been completed, the line will be fully electrified, the stations will be disabled-accessible and more frequent services are to be operated. With the additional funding, the government has invested a total of around €8 billion in the TRU project, with the original funding of €3.5 billion helping to complete the electrification of the line in 2025. Further funding will be confirmed by the Department for Transport (DfT) as the project progresses to cover the total cost of up to €13.4 billion.
