Contract signed for modernisation of Caransebes – Lugoj line

The Asocierea RailWorks consortium, consisting of the French railway technology group Alstom and the Romanian construction companies Arcada Company and Euroconstruct Trading '98, has signed a contract with the Romanian state railway CFR for the modernisation and installation of the European Rail Traffic Management System (ERTMS) Level 2 on the 40 km line from Caransebes to Lugoj. The contract, worth €269 million (RON 1.34 billion), is financed as part of the Caransebes – Timisoara – Arad railway line modernisation project, supported by the Romanian National Reconstruction and Resilience Plan (PNRR). Alstom is responsible for the installation of ERTMS, the implementation of the digital interlockings and passenger information systems, as well as electrification works including power supply and overhead line, while Arcada and Euroconstruct will be responsible for all other construction works. The contract has a term of 42 months and covers both the planning and execution phases. The modernisation of the Caransebes – Lugoj line will enable a maximum speed of 160 km/h for passenger services and 120 km/h for freight services.
