Construction of Lisbon – Porto HSR line to begin in 2024

The construction of the 1,668 mm gauge high-speed rail (HSR) line between Lisbon and Porto with possible speeds of 300 km/h is expected to start in 2024. The project will be built in three steps with the first step, a HSR line between Porto and Soure, to be completed in 2028, a connection between Soure and Carregado to follow by 2030 and the final section between Carregado and Lisbon to be completed at a later date. The project is expected to cost €4.9 billion up to 2030, of which €1 billion is to be provided through EU funding. In addition, Portuguese state railway CP is finalising a €650 million tender for the delivery of 12 high-speed trains (HST) with an option for a further 14 trains.
