Completion of Västlänken project expected in 2030

The Swedish Transport Authority (Trafikverket) has presented an updated forecast for the Västlänken infrastructure project, according to which completion is expected in 2030. The original budget estimate from 2009 was €1.68 billion (SEK 20 billion), but the new forecast puts the total cost at €2.16 billion (SEK 25,7 billion). Converted to today's price levels, the likely total cost is around €3.1 billion. Part of the project is the creation of a temporary terminus at Gothenburg Central Station to increase the capacity of the railway infrastructure. Trafikverket forecasts that completion could be as soon as 2026. The project includes the construction of 8 km of track for regional services and three new underground stations in the city centre of Gothenburg and in the districts of Korsvägen and Haga. 6 km of the line will run through a new tunnel. The project is financed by the West Sweden Package, which aims to develop the infrastructure of western Sweden. Discussions on possible alternatives for further funding will be held with the partners in the West Sweden Package in autumn 2023.
