BAV updates strategy for ERTMS deployment

The Swiss Federal Office of Transport (BAV) has updated its strategy for the introduction of the European Rail Traffic Management System (ERTMS). As part of this update, BAV is aiming to introduce driver's cab signalling for key parts of the standard-gauge rail network. In addition, BAV is planning to convert the existing train radio system to the FRMCS system and will finance the necessary investments in railway infrastructure and vehicles. The standard-gauge network in Switzerland is already fully equipped with the European Train Control System (ETCS), mostly with ETCS Level 1 (L1) LS, and on the main corridors also partially with ETCS L2 with driver's cab signalling. The network equipment is now to be standardised and optimised. The implementation of the ERTMS strategy is being financed by BAV and is scheduled to be completed by 2026. The companies have been awarded contracts to produce a transition plan for the infrastructure and vehicles, which is to be implemented by 2025.
