Authorisation granted for bridge construction across the Strait of Messina

The Stretto di Messina company has approved the plans for the construction of the bridge over the Strait of Messina, which is scheduled to begin in summer 2024 and be completed by 2032. The Board of Directors approved the updated design and the additional planning documents prepared by general contractor Eurolink under the leadership of the Webuild Group. The bridge will accommodate both road and passenger as well as freight rail transport and is designed for 750 m-long trains and new stations. The bridge will include two tracks and the connection to the road and rail network will include 40 km of new links, mostly through tunnels, which will connect the bridge to important railway stations in Calabria and Sicily. Three underground railway stations are also planned. The financing of the project is ensured by the 2024 budget law, a capital increase, and the expected overall profitability of the project. Approval by the Italian Interministerial Committee for Economic Planning and Sustainable Development (CIPESS) is expected in mid-2024, after which the construction phase can begin.
