Romanian state railways CFR has awarded the RailWorks consortium comprising Alstom and the local construction company Arcada a EUR309 million (RON1.53 billion) contract to upgrade the Aghieres – Poieni line. CFR says work on the 36.5 km section of double-track line must be designed and executed within 42 months. Track and infrastructure will be upgraded to enable passenger trains to operate at up to 160 km/h and freight trains at up to 120 km/h. While Arcada will be responsible for civil engineering work, Alstom will provide the digital train control, traffic management, and electrification infrastructure. The same consortium has also won a contract for the 30 km Cluj Napoca – Aghieres section.
