Study for HSR line awarded

The Australian Federal Government has awarded a feasibility study for a high-speed rail (HSR) line between Sydney and Newcastle at a cost of €47.1 million (AU$78.8 million). The High Speed Rail Authority (HSRA), which was established in June 2023, is conducting the study to determine a proposed line, stations, rolling stock, and the likely cost of the project. The study is part of a wider government commitment to invest €333 million in the early development stages of a national HSR network. An earlier plan for a similar project was abandoned by the New South Wales Government in 2019 after spending around €60 million on studies.
