New railway projects presented in Hong Kong

On 19th October 2022, John Lee, Chief Executive of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, announced three railway projects recommended in the Strategic Studies on Railways and Major Roads Beyond 2030. The top priority was the southern extension of the Tseung Kwan O Line, which would optimise transport access to the TKO Area 137 development area. In addition, a 12th railway line was proposed, the Central Rail Link, connecting Kam Tin in Yuen Long with Kwai Chung and Kowloon Tong. A western rail link between Hong Kong and Shenzhen was also recommended, which would connect Hung Shui Kiu with Qianhai and facilitate transport between Hong Kong and Shenzhen. The first stage of the study is expected to be completed before the end of 2022, with the second stage to be launched jointly with Shenzhen City in the first quarter of 2023. Construction work on Hung Shui Kiu Railway Station and the Northern Link Main Line is also scheduled to begin during the government's current tenure and be completed in 2027. The government also intends to further develop plans for a line from the Northern Link to Huanggang Port in Shenzhen. In addition, construction of the Tung Chung Line extension, Oyster Bay station and the Tuen Mun Southern Extension is scheduled to begin in 2023.
