Modernisation of 1,309 railway stations announced

In early August 2023, the Indian Prime Minister approved the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme project, which provides for the modernisation of a total of 1,309 stations, including 76 stations of the Central Railway and 15 stations in the suburbs of Mumbai. The modernisation works include improving access areas, waiting halls, toilets, lifts and escalators, providing free Wi-Fi and better passenger information systems. In addition, the station buildings will be improved and access points from both sides of the city to the stations will be integrated. The modernisation of the stations is to take place in phases and in the long term lead to the creation of city centres at the stations. The modernisation will start at three suburban stations: Parel, Vikhroli and Kanjurmarg.
