KRRI to inspect railway infrastructure by drone

The Korean Railway Research Institute (KRRI) has developed a system for the automatic inspection of railway infrastructure using drones and artificial intelligence (AI). The system consists of a drone, a mobile drone inspection station on the ground and damage detection software that automatically detects defects by analysing the video images captured by the drone. The system can identify damage with an accuracy of 100 mm. Besides KRRI, the South Korean state railway Korail, Sejong University, Yukon System and Softgraphy were involved in the development. The project, with a budget of €6.4 million (KRW9.2 billion), began in June 2019 and is scheduled for completion in June 2023.
