Kolkata applies to government for full funding of metro extension

The Kolkata Metro Rail Corporation (KMRC) has applied to the Indian Ministry of Railways to obtain full funding of €254 million (INR 22.7 billion) for the metro extension project of the east-west line from Sector V to Haldiram. For years, progress on this 6.6 km extension has been delayed by disagreements between the state government and the Ministry of Railways over cost-sharing. The proposed extension starts from the Sector V station and runs mainly on an elevated track along the VIP Road across the Kestopur canal in Salt Lake and along the left side of the VIP Road to the terminus at Haldiram. The extension includes four stations, with the station at Haldiram planned to be underground. The final 1.5 km section to the airport will also be underground, in accordance with the specifications of the Airports Authority of India (AAI). An extension of the metro network to Haldiram was first considered in 2016 when the state government proposed a 5 km link from Central Park to Haldiram's Outlet.
