Izmir opens LRT extension

In the Turkish city of Izmir, a 12 km extension of the light rail transit (LRT) network was opened in the Çiğli district on 27th January 2024. The new line has 14 stations, including the Çiğli Devlet Hastanesi Hospital, and connects to the existing Karşıyaka LRT line and the Izban suburban rail service at Çiğli station. The construction work, which took three years to complete, included the construction of a 750 m long LRT and bicycle viaduct over the city's main road bypass. The total cost of the project was around €183 million. The new LRT line will be served by the existing fleet of 28 Hyundai Rotem light rail vehicles (LRV), with the operator Izmir Metro tendering for a further 26 LRVs.
