IR achieves 90% electrification of broad-gauge rail network

The Indian state railway IR has achieved its target of electrifying 90% of its broad-gauge rail network. In its 2022-23 financial year (FY), 6,565 line-km were electrified, taking the total to 58,812 line-km out of 65,300 km. The target is to electrify the entire 1,676 mm gauge rail network by FY 2023-24. IR aims to achieve zero emissions by 2030. Currently, about 81% of passenger trains and 80% of freight trains are electrified.
