Hokuriku Shinkansen extension to Tsuruga to open in March 2024

East Japan Railway (JR East) and West Japan Railway (JR West) have released details of the new train services that will be introduced with the extension of the Hokuriku Shinkansen to Tsuruga in 2024. The 124 km extension of the Hokuriku Shinkansen high-speed rail (HSR) line from Kanazawa south-west via Fukui to Tsuruga will open on 16th March 2024. JR East and JR West plan to operate 14 round trips per day between Tokyo, Kanazawa, and Tsuruga using 12-car E7/W7 trains. The journey time from Tokyo to Fukui will be reduced by 36 minutes to 2 hours 51 minutes, while the journey time from Tokyo to Tsuruga will be reduced by 50 minutes to 3 hours 8 minutes. In addition, there will be 25 conventional services per day from Tsuruga to Osaka and eight times daily to Nagoya. There will also be five round trips per day on the Limited Express service from Kanazawa north to Wakura Onsen.
