Government approves expansion of rail network

The Israeli government has confirmed plans to expand the rail network and increase capacity on existing lines. At the end of December 2023, the government approved the four-track expansion of the Tel Aviv – Haifa coastal line, with high-speed rail (HSR) lines for speeds up to 250 km/h to be built between Shefayim and Haifa Hof HaCarmel. Future plans include a new 83 km HSR line between the Pleshet junction north of Ashdod, Na'an, and Be'er Sheva North. A six-track expansion is also planned for the 27 km Shefayim – Ben Gurion Airport line. On 14th December 2023, the government announced that the Infrastructure Authority would draw up designs for the planned line between Tiberias on the Sea of Galilee and Tzfat, Kiryat-Shmona, and the existing line to Karmi'el.
