Government announces expansion of rail network ahead of local elections

The Turkish government has announced plans to develop the country's railway infrastructure ahead of the local elections on 31st March 2024. It is planned to realise the 292 km long Kirikkale – Çorum – Amasya – Samsun high-speed rail line (HSR line), for which the planning has already been completed and the environmental impact assessment has been approved. The government also announced preparations for a project to develop a 509 km coastal railway line connecting Samsun with the cities of Ordu, Trabzon, and Rize on the Black Sea and the Sarp border crossing with Georgia. In addition, the Kemalpasa logistics centre in Izmir, which is currently under construction, is to be expanded for intermodal transport by the 2040s. Other logistics centres, such as the one in Sivas, are also under construction or in planning. The 26 km long suburban rail line currently under construction in the city of Konya is to be extended to 46 km. The first phase of construction between the airport and the HSR railway station began in July 2023 and is scheduled for completion in 2025.
