Extension of Hokuriku Shinkansen to Tsuruga opened

The extension of the Hokuriku Shinkansen high-speed rail line (HSR line) to Tsuruga was opened on 16th March 2024. The 125 km long section connects Tsuruga in Fukui Prefecture with Kanazawa, where it connects to the existing HSR network. Construction work began in 2012 and includes six new stations, with the journey time between Tokyo and Tsuruga reduced by 50 minutes to 3 hours 8 minutes. A further extension of the Hokuriku Shinkansen to Shin-Osaka in western Japan is also planned.
