Three new metro lines planned for Ho Chi Minh City

Three new metro lines are planned in Ho Chi Minh City with an investment volume of over €4.6 billion (US$5 billion). The planned lines 3a, the first phase of line 5, and the second phase of line 2 are to connect to lines 1 and 2, which are already under construction. The second phase of line 2, which will be 6 km long and connect the new district of Thu Thiem, is expected to cost €1.2 billion and is to be financed by loans from the South Korean government. Construction of the first phase of line 2 began at the start of 2024 and is due to be completed by 2030. Line 3a is planned with 11 underground stations and is expected to cost more than €1.8 billion, with funding expected from the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA). The 9 km long first phase of line 5 includes a 7.5 km underground section and is estimated to cost over €1.6 billion. The Ho Chi Minh City Management Authority for Urban Railways already secured funding for this in 2013 from the Asian Development Bank, the European Investment Bank (EIB) and the Spanish government. The feasibility studies have already been submitted to the Ministry of Planning and Investment. Further metro lines, as well as a light rail transit (LRT) line, and two monorail lines are planned in Ho Chi Minh City.
