Construction begins of third rail line to China

Kazakhstan has officially begun construction of its third rail line to China, which is to increase freight capacity between the two countries by more than two thirds by 2027. The 272 km line will run from Ayagoz to Bakhty on the Chinese border and on to Chuguchak. The double-track line is part of a larger investment programme by the Kazakh government, which includes the construction of a total of 1,300 km of new railway lines. Financial details were not disclosed, except that an unnamed private investor is involved.
