The Israeli National Infrastructure Committee has approved a plan to build a light rail transit (LRT) line in the southern city of Be'er Sheva. The project is expected to take ten years and cost around €1.9 billion (US$ 2.11 billion). The planned 25 km line will run from the railway station in the centre of Be'er Sheva along Highway 60 to the new Kiryat Hamodi'in military intelligence base in Likit, east of Be'er Sheva, and end near the Meitar Cross in Yehuda, south of Hebron. The line will also serve Soroka Medical Centre and Ben Gurion University. In addition to locals, the new line will provide an important transport solution for military personnel needing to travel to and from the new intelligence base, which is scheduled to open in 2028. The site for the line's depot will be selected after an Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) is completed. The planning of the project will be overseen by Netivei, Israel's National Transport Infrastructure Company.
