Cabinet approves six projects for multi-track expansion

On 8th February 2024, the Indian cabinet approved six projects for multi-track expansion of Indian state railway IR. The projects are intended to increase line capacity and improve rail operations. They were approved by the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) and involve investments of around €138.6 million (INR 12.34 billion), which will be borne entirely by the central government. The six projects cover the six states of Rajasthan, Assam, Telangana, Gujarat, Andhra Pradesh, and Nagaland, and will add 1,020 km of track to the railway network. The capacity expansion will allow for an additional 87 million t of freight per year and is important for the transport of freight such as grain, food, fertilisers, and coal.
