Afcons to build tunnel section on Mumbai – Ahmedabad HSR line

On 8th June 2023, the Indian National High Speed Rail Corp Ltd (NHSRCL) signed a contract worth €722 million (INR 64 billion) with Afcons Infrastructure for the construction of a 21 km section of the Mumbai – Ahmedabad high-speed rail (HSR) line running in a tunnel from Bandra Kurla Complex in Mumbai to Shilphata. The works in package MAHSR C-2, which include 7 km of undersea tunnel, are expected to begin shortly. Under the terms of the contract, they must be completed within 1,888 days. Larsen & Toubro also submitted a bid for the contract. For the works, three tunnel boring machines (TBM) with a cutter head diameter of 13.10 m will be used to excavate 16 km of the single-bore tunnel which will accommodate both tracks of the HSR line.
