The third section of the Tren Maya project between Cancún airport and Playa del Carmen was put into operation on 29th February 2024. The 45.6 km long electrified double-track section with an intermediate station in Puerto Morelos extends the Cancún – Palenque line, which opened in January 2024. Manufacturer Alstom has been contracted to supply 42 X'Trapolis electric multiple units (EMUs) for the operation of the Tren Maya, which is scheduled for completion in the fourth quarter of 2024 (Q4/2024). The opening of further sections of the Tren Maya has been postponed until after the presidential elections in June 2024. A federal court ordered a freeze on construction for section 5 South Playa del Carmen – Tulum in mid-February 2024 and demanded the submission of environmental studies to protect the caves and sinkholes in the karst landscape.
