Quito metro resumes operations

The metro system in Quito resumed operations on 1st December 2023 after technical problems and political disputes interrupted operations just nine days after the official opening on 21st December 2022. The 22.6 km Line 1 with 15 stations, which runs from Quitumbe to El Labrador, is operated by the EOMMT consortium, consisting of Metro Medellin from Colombia and Transdev. It will be operated under a six-year contract awarded in July 2022. Spanish rail vehicle manufacturer CAF has supplied 18 six-car metro trains worth €169.7 million (US$183 million). Construction work began in 2016, with a total cost of €1.9 billion, financed by the European Investment Bank (EIB), the Development Bank of Latin America, the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), and the World Bank.
