Québec awards study on alternative transport after LRT project fails

The Québec government has awarded CPDQ Infra, an infrastructure investment specialist, a contract to examine alternatives for the development of public transport links for Québec City, following the failure of a planned Light Rail Transit (LRT) system. The city had developed plans for a 19.3 km LRT with 29 stops. On 1st November 2023, the city council announced that planning for construction would not proceed as expected after the last remaining consortium withdrew from the tender process. The project has been affected by rising costs and is now estimated to cost between €7 million (CA$ 10 million) and €9 million. The City Council has already selected Alstom Transport Canada to supply and maintain 34 Citadis Spirit Light Rail Vehicles (LRV). Construction was originally scheduled to begin in 2024 and be completed by 2029.
