Peru proceeds with National Railway Development Plan

On 8th September 2023, known as the Day of the Railroad, Peru's Ministry of Transport and Communications (MTC), advanced the implementation of the National Railway Development Plan, which sets out medium-term and long-term strategies for the country's railway infrastructure. The plan aims to develop an efficient national railway system that has shorter travel times and lower logistics costs for passenger and freight transport, while addressing environmental concerns. It also aims to improve the quality and competitiveness of transport operators and to link railway infrastructure with other modes of transport as part of an intermodal approach. Peru has 1,907 km of railway lines, divided into private, public non-concessionary and public concessionary lines. The National Railway Development Plan includes projects such as the extension of metro line 1 in Lima and the construction of the Lima – Ica line in southern Peru.
